Why a barrel swap works
Most striker-fired pistols let you swap the barrel without tools or gunsmithing. A threaded replacement barrel extends slightly past the slide and carries threads for a suppressor mount or thread protector. Our thread pitch cheat sheet explains what 1/2x28 and other pitches mean.
What else you need
- Suppressor-height sights. Most pistol suppressors block standard sights. Taller sights, or a red dot with tall co-witness sights, restore your sight picture.
- A booster (piston). Most centerfire pistols use a tilting-barrel design. Adding a suppressor's weight to the barrel can stop it from cycling reliably. A booster, sometimes called a Nielsen device, lets the barrel unlock normally. Most pistol cans include or offer one.
- Holster fit. A threaded barrel sticks out past the slide, so some holsters need an open muzzle end.
Glock 17 and 19
SilencerCo's threaded barrels for the Glock 17 and 19 are listed with 1/2x28 threads. Rival Arms makes threaded barrels for specific generations: the listing includes a Glock 19 Gen 3/4 barrel and a Glock 17 Gen 5 barrel. Match the barrel to your exact model and generation.

Sig P320
For the full-size P320, Sig's own threaded barrel keeps everything factory, while SilencerCo offers an aftermarket option. Both are listed at 1/2x28. Confirm which P320 size your barrel is for, since the modular system uses different barrel lengths.

Sig P365
The P365 is a micro-compact, so a suppressor makes it front-heavy, but a threaded barrel is still a fun way to use a gun you already own. True Precision makes a threaded P365 barrel listed at 1/2x28. Our sister site DefensiveHandgun covers P365 upgrades more broadly.

Or buy a factory-threaded host
If you do not already own one of these pistols, a factory-threaded gun like the FN 509 Tactical comes ready, with suppressor-height sights and an optics cut. See our FN 509 Tactical host guide.
Checklist
- Match the barrel to your exact model and generation.
- Confirm thread pitch matches your can's mount.
- Add suppressor-height sights or a tall co-witness setup.
- Use a booster for tilting-barrel pistols.
- Check holster fit.
- Test function with and without the can.
A threaded barrel alone does not make a host compatible. Confirm the suppressor's caliber rating, thread pitch, mount and the manufacturer's host limits.
Frequently asked questions
What thread pitch do 9mm Glock barrels use?
Most threaded 9mm Glock barrels use 1/2x28. Confirm on the listing for your exact barrel.
Do I need a booster to suppress a Glock?
Most tilting-barrel pistols need a booster, also called a Nielsen device, to cycle reliably with a suppressor attached.
Do I need taller sights with a suppressor?
Usually. Most pistol suppressors block standard sights, so suppressor-height sights or a red dot with tall sights are common.
Will a threaded barrel fit my holster?
Some holsters need an open muzzle end to clear the extra barrel length. Check before buying.
