Why it's a reference host
- Threaded barrel from the factory. No aftermarket barrel, no fitting. Confirm the thread pitch on your SKU against your mount.
- Suppressor-height night sights that you can see over most pistol cans.
- Optics-ready slide. A red dot plus tall irons is the classic suppressed-pistol setup.
- Full-size capacity and grip, which help control the extra weight at the muzzle.

The booster question
Recoil-operated pistols rely on the barrel and slide moving together. A suppressor's weight on the barrel can stop the action from unlocking reliably. A booster (Nielsen device) in the can's mount temporarily separates the can's weight from the barrel, so the pistol cycles. Most pistol cans include one or offer it as a mount option. Confirm that yours does. See mounting options.
Ammo: go subsonic
Many 115gr and 124gr 9mm loads are supersonic, and the sonic crack undercuts the suppressor. 147gr subsonic loads are the standard pairing:
US Cartridge 9mm 147gr subsonic FMJ
Winchester Super Suppressed 9mm 147gr
Hornady Subsonic 9mm 147gr XTP
Function-test with the can attached. Suppressed pistols run dirtier and can be more sensitive to ammo. See subsonic ammo by caliber.
Pick a can
A 9mm-rated pistol can with a booster is the natural choice. Some owners buy a .45-rated can to cover more hosts, which is usually a little louder on 9mm.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a booster on the FN 509 Tactical?
Like most recoil-operated pistols, it generally needs a suppressor with a booster (Nielsen device) to cycle reliably with a can attached. Most pistol cans include or accept one.
Why suppressor-height sights?
A suppressor blocks standard-height sights. Taller sights let you aim over the can.
What ammo works best suppressed?
147-grain 9mm subsonic loads are the usual choice. Most 9mm is supersonic at lighter weights, and the bullet's crack defeats much of the point.
Can I run a red dot and a suppressor?
Yes. The optics cut and suppressor-height sights are designed to work together, with the sights co-witnessing through many dots.
