Direct-Thread vs QD Suppressor Mounts: Which One Do You Need?

How your suppressor attaches affects weight, cost, repeatability and how easily you can move it between guns.

Short answer: One can on one or two guns: direct-thread. It's lighter, cheaper and simple. One rifle can across several hosts: a QD system with a matching muzzle device on each gun pays for itself in speed and repeatability. Pistols: a booster on direct threads.

Direct-thread

The suppressor, or its threaded mount, screws directly onto the barrel threads.

Quick-detach (QD)

A muzzle device (a brake, flash hider or dedicated mount) is installed on each rifle, and the suppressor locks onto it with a latch or taper.

Pistols: the booster

Recoil-operated pistols need a booster (Nielsen device) mount on the barrel threads so the action cycles with the can's weight. Pistol-caliber carbines generally use a fixed (non-booster) mount. See FN 509 Tactical as a host.

Alignment matters

A misaligned mount can cause baffle strikes. Always check alignment with a bore rod or alignment tool when mounting a can on a new host, and make sure the barrel's thread shoulder is square.

Frequently asked questions

Is QD better than direct-thread?

Not always. QD systems make moving a can between hosts fast and repeatable, but they add weight, length and cost per host. Direct-thread is simpler and lighter.

Can a direct-thread can get stuck?

Carbon can lock a can to the threads, especially on rifles. Periodic removal and anti-seize where appropriate help.

What is an end cap?

The front cap of many modular suppressors. Different end caps can change the exit bore or adapt the can to different calibers.

Can I use a QD mount on a pistol?

Pistols typically use a booster/piston mount on direct threads rather than a rifle-style QD system.
